Happy new year to everyone, Happy new year to the whole world whether good or bad because the good will continue to be good and evil may start to be good when they are happy so that we can all live in some beautiful place...I know this is just a dream because world have never been like this and will never be because it's the fate of the human race to be on a continuous straggle.
In my opinion I think 2009 is a very very important year that will effect the coming years greatly…It can be the best year that will drag even better years and it can be another year that will drag miserable years; it really depends on the decisions of the leaders of the world, how smart they are and how much do they love their country and its people.
I'll start from Iraq…in this year the provisional elections will take place…the result will have a great impact on the daily lives of Iraqis (if the elections were fair) the elected people will be responsible for almost everything in their state, I'll consider the elections to be fair so that I can say in this elections we will know whether the "blind Iraqis" (blind Iraqis are the Iraqis who follow without thinking, the ones who chooses their leaders depending on a sectarian bases who thinks the elections are like football matches…they have a team to cheer and it doesn't matter if the team is good or not) have learned their lessons in the hard way or despite all what happened they haven't learned a thing yet! Let's see if the sad reality have opened their eyes and minds to make the right decision because sadly and unfortunately they hold the majority…I wish in this elections the Iraqis (Shiites, Sunnis, Kurds, Muslims and Christians) will choose their candidate not depending on his sect or nationality because it's the same as his but depending on the ability and the suitability for the important position that he will hold, because this position will effect everyone not only him or his sect and nationality, I wish the blind Iraqis stop being selfish and think of what is best for their country…personally, I think I'll go for Ayad Alawi not because he is the one, at least for me….but because I couldn't find any better one and he is suitable for large slice of Iraqis…he is a Shiite but secular (I really like secular politicians because religion is between the man and his god) his time was the best for Baghdadists after 2003, he is a strong man who took really hard decisions when he was in power and I respect him for that (even if some of those weren't so right), his party is not sectarian because it contains all the slices of Iraq and finally I like his charisma, the way he thinks and talks and that's why I'll choose him although I'm sure he will not win because so many Iraqis hate him but I'll do my job and choose what I think is best for my people.
This year could be a continuation for the few good things that happened last year or it could be the end of it, more good things could happen this year or we may even lose the achievements that has been accomplished, as I said it really depends on the decisions.
And now it is Obama time, which is a shared topic between Americans and Iraqis…, will he be as the world expected him to be? Will he be the first African American president who saved the US from the economical crisis, finished the mess that Bush started and the one who took the right decisions to make the things right again in Iraq, USA and Afghanistan…will he be wise, strong and sharp or will he be the first African American president who screwed everything that hadn't been screwed by Bush and becomes the president who knows how to talk and look trustworthy but doesn't know how to act right…that's up to him and his decisions in the next coming years. But for the sake of the whole world and the human race let's hope he will be the first kind.
Let's hope this year will bring an end to the economical crisis of the world and all the countries will find a way out of that hard turn…let's hope the scientists will find new useful inventions and new medications or ways to cure the countless disease and conditions that they haven't found a cure for till now, let's just hope the world will be a better place for everyone.
And finally I wish you all; happiness, success and the best health…May all your dreams come true, and you find your internal peace.

Happy New Year to you my friendly Iraqi.
You have one thing none of these evil mindless bastards that cause bloodshed in the name of allah in the hope of the waiting virgins, and that my friend is Hope with a capital 'H'.
What goes round comes round and the devils will be slain when their time comes and those that suffer in feared silence will rise up like the Pheonix heads held high, shoulders back and standing tall to make Iraq is feel proud and their country great again.
Happy New Yr from London.

Happy New Year to you Mohammed!! Your post is brilliant in your assessment of the political situation in your country and mine. You are exactly right. All the people in the world deserve much much better than what's been going on and so do the plantlife and all creatures great and small. The only thing I might add is that I read the Green Zone is being handed over to the Iraqis. May you go there and enjoy everything there that's been off limits to the Iraqi people. I'm not sure what's there, but even if it's just a Burger King, I hope you go and check it out for yourself, finally. FYI, if there is a Burger King, just my opinion, but I'm not a fan of fast food places. Burger King is a fast food place.
I expect most of this year to be rough economically for most of the world. Iraq may actually do better than most places. Many Americans are feeling the pain of the credit crisis. They were living on borrowed money. I'm so happy I never let myself live that way. Something to be aware of, capitalism isn't all bad, but the way it was going was totally out of control. Criminal schemes were going on everywhere. So now we have to pay the price. People here will have to learn to live with less, which I don't see as a bad thing. People in other parts of the world may finally have their chance to have a bit more and I see that as a good thing. All things in moderation, so we don't end up ruining the planet we all share.
Sending much light and love to you and your family, Mohammed, for a happier 2009:)
Same to you, Mohammed. Best wishes for you and your family in 2009.
...and becomes the president who knows how to talk and look trustworthy but doesn't know how to act right…
Sadly I think this is what Obama will turn out to be. His silence on the massacres in Gaza is sickening.
Hi Dr M
Happy New Year to you and your family.
I sincerely hope 2009 will be the year Iraq turns the corner, and is able to pull herself together, politically, financially, and emotionally. I know the latter is a big ask.
I hope your elections remain free from coercion, not like the last, where my relatives on the Nineveh Plain were scared out of their wits by armed men from a certain sect.
I couldn't wish more for the violence to stop, and everyone join together, united, regardless of sect or religion.
I also hope Obama comes through with his promises, and is not a 'paper tiger' where Iraq is concerned.
As for Obama pulling the US out of the self made financial crises they are in, that will be tough. Maybe they shouldn't have spent so much on OIL in the first place?
Cheers for 2009.
JG - President-elect Obama has explained his silence: there can only ever be one US President at a time. I am sure that he doesn't want to give Dubya a "reason" to be sticking his oar in again, after he is gone.
Moving on, everyone should read this February 2009 Vanity Fair article, An Oral History of the Bush White House: Politics & Power.
the vacuums that existed around George Bush — personality vacuum, character vacuum, details vacuum, experience vacuum.
you know, Don’t give the president a lot of long memos, he’s not a big reader — well, shit. I mean, the president of the United States is not a big reader?
Preparations for war with Iraq are not yet publicly acknowledged, but earlier in the spring, as Condoleezza Rice discusses diplomatic initiatives involving Iraq with several senators, Bush pokes his head into the room and says, “Fuck Saddam. We’re taking him out.”
The administration’s public stance is that it hopes to avoid war with Iraq. In the meeting, however, Bush and Blair agree on a start date for the war, irrespective of the outcome of U.N. inspections: March 10. Bush proposes that a pretext for war might be provided if an aircraft were painted with U.N. colors and sent in low over Iraq, in the hope that it would draw fire.
The administration of Iraq never recovered. It was a vacuum in security that became irremediable, at least until the surge of 2007. And to that extent, four years were not only wasted but allowed to take on the most terrible cost because of that lack of planning, lack of resources put in on the ground. And I see that lack of planning as residing in the responsibility of the Pentagon
President Bush has always sought, still seeks today, a victory, military victory. And we did not recommend that. The gist of what we had to say was a responsible exit. He didn’t like that.
Bush had a lot of .45-caliber instincts, cowboy instincts. Cheney knew exactly how to polish him and rub him. He knew exactly when to give him a memo or when to do this or when to do that and exactly the word choice to use to get him really excited.

Really? Why is is ok for him to comment on the financial crises then?
Anyway, the day after he made the 'one president at a time' comment he broke his silence on Gaza saying the loss of civilian life is "a source of deep concern" for him!
So, one day it's "one president at at time, folks, I couldn't possibly comment" and the next day he makes a comment. So which is it?
Failing to outrightly condemn the wanton slaughter in Gaza is appalling. Shame on him.
Are you American now, Indigo? I guess being ridiculed for your ignorance of the British political system, culture and history wasn't enough to teach you not to talk about things you don't understand? Now you want to talk as if you know something about America too? lol.
Let me guess... you are American, born to American parents, but were raised in the Philippines and therefore have great respect for all cultures, but especially Arab culture.
By the way, Indigo, have you ever criticized a westerner who was commenting about Iraq, for not knowing what they were talking about?
Folks,
Great result for Raed Jarrar.
Of course the New York clown and teacher at a third rate university - Jeffrey Schuster - is throwing his toys out of the pram.
Hilarious to watch.
I posted a comment at his blog in support of Raed and he deleted it and banned me! What a hypocrite Jeffrey is. He gives Iraqi bloggers grief for banning him after he spreads his lies and hatred all over their comments pages. Then he won't even tolerate one dissenting comment on his own site.
As many will know, Raed Jarrar had to get a restraining order against Jeffrey after continuous harrassment of both Jarrar and his girlfriend Nikki.
One wonders will the stalking and harrassement resume now, given how "sickened" Jeffrey is at Raed's victory.
@ Mohammed.
Dear Mohammed,
I see that my Favourite Ape, the poor Marine NCO Craig, keeps telling lies in bad faith about Rachel/Indigo.
Everybody who has read Rachel's posts these past few years knows that Rachel is not just English, but quintessentially English, of a 100 % Englishness (despite claiming some Irish ancestors)!
But, on second thoughts, it is possible that our Craig, this poor animal from Southern Cahleehfowniah, has NO clue whatsoever (having no clue on anything outside the borders of Apeland) ...
Do please ascertain which is the case, dear Mohammed: if instead the beast Craig is pervicaciously lying in bad faith, on your part a rap on his knuckles would be indicated (yes, tiring, since he's got four hands and that makes four raps !) ...
Rachel is not just English, but quintessentially English
Right. And that's why she doesn't know things about Britain that any 5 year old British could would know, and any 12 year old American kid would know. In case you missed it, she got last year... why do you think she suddenly came up with the "I grew up in East Africa" cover story? It's her own fault, if she hadn't started posting comments savaging Britain's history and gotten it all wrong, nobody would have known. But that's Indigo for you. She has to be an expert on everything... even things she doesn't know a damn thing about.
I'm sure she feels much better having you supporting her in her lies, though. All I'm asking is the Dr M not vouch for her. I don't care about your non-existent credibility, I-man.
And by the way, I thought you were claiming to be Italian? Who are you to couch for somebody's "Englishness"? lol.
I'm not going to be back to this thread, so to preemptively counter any additional stupidities from Italian, I will leave this:
Indigo once claimed Britain is not a nuclear power. Who, in Britain, doesn't know that the UK has nuclear weapons? Hmmm? Even small children know that. If somebody claimed to be American and then asserted authoritatively that the US is not a nuclear power, how many people would believe that person was an American? Anyone?
That's one example. I could go on, because she had a lot of brainfarts... particularly about the UK during WWII, in regards to things that are legendary in the UK, which she got completely wrong.
This case is closed, and it was closed a long time ago. You are just beating a dead horse, Italian... but that's you, isn't it?
So, tell us about the noble resistance some more. That's much more interesting.
Dr. Mohammed, may you and your growing family enjoy a most peaceful and happy 2009. I hope, as you do, that the provential elections will result in a new beginning for Iraq. The more sensible people who vote for the best person with no regard for religion, the better. I still think that you and people just like you have to get in the ring and run for these offices. As for our new President(starting Jan20th), I did not vote for him. I don't feel at all comfortable that he will do a good job, B U T, I hope and pray that I am wrong. I do think he will do all right for Iraq however. He wants to get mostly all of our troops out in 16 months, and I think the security situation will be ripe for that to occur, or at least close. I don't think that it mattered who won our election for this to be true. I hope you don't mind if I take a moment to reprimand certain of your commentors. The child-like squabbling going on here lately is really getting irksome. You all know who you are. Nobody cares to read comment after comment of this gibberish. Please take it somewhere else and stop demeaning this otherwise excellant blog. We should all be able to stay civil and agree to disagree when necessary. Mohammed, again, have a great 2009! Your American friend
Joe
