All of us; including all the Iraqis are witnessing a terrible secrecy and silence of the media of what is happening in Iraq now…I must say that some aspects have improved and I must say that the militia's grip had loosened a bit but the real situation on the ground is far from what is said, I don't want to put it in a form of a conspiracy theory, but at the beginning we lost the credibility and the honesty of the western media then we lost the credibility of the Arab media and now we are losing the Iraqi media's credibility…there might be thousands of reasons behind this and I tend to believe that targeting journalists are one of the main reasons followed by the pressure of the governments on the media.
For an example, yesterday we heard five loud explosions that shook the ground and I started calling different friends in different areas and all of them said that they think it's so close to their house because it's so loud…but nothing was mentioned!! And that happens so often…there are still unidentified dead bodies found in Baghdad but most of the well-known channels don't mention it…it has a range of about 5 dead bodies daily...and if anyone wants to be sure all he have to do is to pass by the forensic medicine building and he would see the shocking number of coffins and people crying their beloved ones.
Adhamiya is considered safe now after it was so disturbed and extremely dangerous and when one enters Adhamiya now he would easily feel the difference…but wouldn't feel what are the things that happens underground!!!
About a week ago my relative have been kidnapped and unfortunately I can't give any details about this story because it has reached so many people and many of them are holding high authorities but I can say it was more like a Hollywood suspense movie or more like "Law and Order"…but thank god that relative is with us now safe and sound and the credit and thanks goes to all the people who participated in achieving this, I mentioned this because when I went to the police station to open a case and see if the US troops there can trace the cell phone I knew that this is the fourth kidnapping case last week only in Adhamiya!!! That was a real shock to me…4 kidnapping cases in an area where every 100 meters there is an awakening checkpoint! Something smells fishy and weird.
Today I was watching the news and the puppet AlMaliki was giving a speech in Tehran…he was talking about the great numbers of people coming back to Iraq and how the law is the dominant force in Iraq now and how the government is helping the refugees coming back to their country!! I'd love to know how??!!!
This is exactly what can be called the media disguise…I don't know any one who wants to come back or anyone who came back among all the people I know or even in my neighborhood…If you have noticed that whenever some Iraqi official goes to a country where there are Iraqi refugees something bad happens to them and the laws changes for the worst…like when AlHashimi visited Jordan two weeks ago the Jordanian closed the visa application and they said it will be reopened after 16th of July!!!
Then the puppet started flirting with his boyfriend Najad and thanked Iran for its efforts in the process of peace in Iraq!!! And said that Iraq wouldn't allow US to use Iraq to attack Iran!!! I really needed to laugh…who are you to stop the US from doing anything…you can't stop them even if they wanted to rape you…they are the ones who put you in your position…the puppet said we have agreements! Well the US didn't care about any agreement when they started the war despite it was with the UN so why would they respect an agreement with you! Silly puppet.

Now I'll leave you with some photos from my country

For Western media, it seems to me that they are not as interested in Iraq as used to be. It infuriates me because it is difficult to get adequate news. Our Western coverage was slanted before the invasion even began. It was horrible to be sending my husband off to war and have the entire country waving flags, in a frenzy to invade Iraq. Such excitement, I couldn't understand it, or maybe I refused to understand it, but I knew it was the tide of public opinion, which is fickle and shallow. I spent years, as a sociologist combing articles and stories, trying to grasp why we invaded your country. Not one of the tag lines fed to me by the news made any sense, nor did they stand the test of time. There was always something deceptive and dishonest, much like the thing Dick Cheney wears on his face that's supposed to be a smile. I realized threw all this review of the literature that the blessed fourth estate, that which we in America used to rely on to keep things straight, had disappeared into corporate oblivion as a sell out. there are very few Woodwards and Bernsteins left anymore. Most the press have gotten so used to giving Bush a pass on just about anything that even the idiotic doesn't get questioned.
But why should there be? We are so vapid, do we really care about anything unless it directly impacts us? Gas prices and housing prices are what's important right now, along with who will inherit the Bush mess next year. Very rarely does Iraq make our news anymore because it is not immediate in our world. Our economy is a mess, that is clearly more important than Iraq. So the slant isn't even a slant here anymore, it just doesn't seem to matter. Lazy, self-absorbed and rather shallow.
I cannot even imagine the degree of bravery it takes to be a reporter in your country and report the honest to God news. It seems like there would be factions standing in line to kill you for it. It is understandable where under such pressure men and women may find the option to be silent and live another day more prefered than to try to speak out and be silenced for eternity.
I do have to ask you Mohammed, because I have my own sociological interpretations from the outside, way outside, this question: did Saddam serve a purpose as the ruler of Iraq? were things for you personally better or worse five + years ago?
Chelli
Mohammed,
that was a great post.
You brought up a thing that few people talk about...
So interesting...
i think you know that 215 journalists were killed since the start of the war, don't you?
this is the number of www.rsf.org.
It includes iraqis and foreigners..But of course the iraqis are more targeted. This is so sad...
The Arab and Iraqi media had "credibility"???
I almost forgot, they did in the APU, silly me. As a matter of fact in the APU it's not just Arab and Iraqi media that had credibility, so do the Cuban media, the Russian and the Chinese, and most specially the new Chaves media. As a matter of fact they still do.
Good post Mohammed. The way I see it from where I'm at (sweden) people are just no longer interested. There are hardly any news at all about Iraq in our national media. If there's a bombing and 100+ people are killed there's maybe a short article about it in some of the news papers. If it's "only" 20 or so people it's not counted as news it seems.
I get most of my news from a collection of online publications. And from blogs such as this one.
Your writings are important since you have a unique perspective that rarely gets represented by major news outlets. Keep up your reporting.

Mohammed, thank you for this post. It is indeed true that we hear hardly anything about Iraq in the media these days, even in my country South Africa which was opposed to the US invasion and sympathetic towards Iraqi deaths. As Marcus said, we hear something if a particularly gruesome attack takes place, or as running ticker-tape subtitle under the newsreader. This silence leads people to believe Iraq is peaceful and quiet, whereas the truth is far different. There are even some warmongers that try and make a case that there are more people killed per capita in South Africa than Iraq, which is clearly ludicrous. On the other hand, I have to say that reporters in Iraq are pretty damn brave already, since this is officially the deadliest war for reporters, ever.
Saad Eskander, director of Baghdad's national library, wants to 'help Iraqis understand their past and build their future' through education. The former Kurdish fighter tells Stuart Jeffries why culture is the key, why the US must surrender looted papers - and why he refuses to have a bodyguard Guardian 9 June 2008.

Dear Dr. Mohammed
Thank you for all your contributions.

One picture is worth 1,000 words, as the saying goes. Your photographs tell the story and are so well done. You are an artist, Mohammed. I think part of the reason the story isn't told, is due to the fact that so many foreign journalists haven't been able to work in Iraq, because of the killing. The local Iraqi journalists are considering leaving if they haven't left Iraq already. Then as you point out, there are the other foreign influences, like Iran working to bias the news to their advantage. I am glad that the number of killings has dropped, although even a few murders a day is way too many. Our nightly news always begins with the nightly murder report, locally.
Is that why your last post was deleted? because of the kidnappings?
I think that unfortunately the media finds the Iraqi war old news. It isn't fair.
You are absolutely right about one thing: If the US wants, it gets. Usually by the blood and suffering of innocent people, i hope that those bastards stay out of Iran or even more blood will be spilled for their thirst for oil.
Good luck my friend
Asalaam-o-Alekom. My name is Aamir Shah. I am from Pakistan. You are saying that western media is silenced. Well we all know that western media is in control of jews. And because of them our Iraqi brothers are suffering. I know the situation of your and also mine Holy country Iraq. But these pictures are just the samples of what is going on there. Daily many innocent Iraqis are dying because of American army's shelling, Air strikes, Tanks, and soldiers. We all Pakistanis are with you, our brothers. Allah Bless you and free Iraq from brutal invaders. Ameen.
Hi, Muhammad
We promised that Iraqis wouldn't be abandoned by the NDHF Net, so here's some back-up for that:

Just like the Germans half a century ago the US-Americans are going to pay for their crimes against humanity.
They say America is a free country but what is told on the news is just a small bit of what is really going on in the world. Especially when it comes to Iraq because we are all so tired of this war that was started over false reasons. They don't want us to know that things arent getting better. Also, there is still war going on in Afghanistan but it is never ever reported on. Some internet news sites are saying that Bush is going to have a war with Iran by the year's end. So, we will see.
