I'd like to answer your post about the solution for Iraq , the first thing that should be done is building a strong government that can hold things together because the war you mentioned is not really between Sunni and Shiite it's between the militias of both sides and most of the militia members are criminals and fanatics , that's the problem ; it's a gang war in the name of religion.so what needs to be done next is ending the actions of these militias and putting it's leaders and members behind bars and that's why we need a strong government , it's true that there is some hatred growing between the civilians of both sides but it's because the actions of the other side militia and for the killing that has been done , so we need a strong government that can join the two sides without preferring one on another , and the two sides can live in peace like they used to be .
So the most important thing and the most important solution is a strong unified government then the people will be unified by them selves , and putting all the criminals and militia leaders behind bars would make thing even better , another thing is the corrupted members in the government, ministries, National Guards and Police . they should be behind bars of what they have done to the Iraqi people.
now I want to talk about the Iraqi's perception for the West:
Top 7 perceptions
I made a small research about the perception of Iraqis for Westerners in general and Americans specifically , I asked 15 moderate and highly-educated Iraqi men and women , and collected their perceptions and placed the most repeated ones on the top of the list. This research is not necessarily how do the Iraqi street looks to the westerners , but I can say that it's the perception of the highly educated and moderate Iraqis , none of them was very religious , what I want to say is that the perception of the Iraqi street might be more hateful and rejecting to the westerners , but those were the people I asked and these are their perceptions and this doesn't mean that all the moderate and highly educated people have the same perceptions. It's relatively a small research group and this is what they have said:
#1Westerners think most Muslims and Arabs are Terrorists
"Westerners thinks most of the Muslims and Arabs are terrorists , they look at Islam as a religion of terrorism , they think that every Muslim and Arab is willing to harm them. It's because most of what they see and hear about Islam is men with long beards carrying an AK-47 and wearing an explosive belt. They don't know about the real Islam which is called the religion of forgiveness , all they hear about is the Islamic fanatics. It's why they hate think that Islam is a religion of terrorism and why not? If we the moderate Muslims are hate those terrorists too, what about them? It's not their fault , it's the fault of their media that pictures all the Muslims like this and fault of the terrorists who made the picture of Islam ugly. Real Islam is not like this."
#2Westerners have absolute Freedom
"Westerners have the absolute freedom. They can say what they want , feel or think wherever they are and whenever they want. It's the freedom of speech they have, it's the freedom of behaviour they have, it's a gift and a dream to all the Arabs. But, their problem is that they miss use it some times".
#3Westerners are Slaves to their Media
"They are slaves to their media , whatever their media says. They take it for granted and believe it , few of them seek the truth behind what the media says. The biggest problem is that their media is lying and keeping things from them; the media is not free and honest all the time"
#4Westerners Can Make Big Money From Nothing
"If you are a westerner , you can make big money from nothing. For example, if you have a brilliant idea and know a good publisher, you could have millions in a short time. Unlike in Iraq and Arabic countries in general , this is impossible because you can't get large money unless you have larger money in the first place".
#5 Americans are Ignorant to the Rest of the World
"Westerners in general and Americans specifically are ignorant to the rest of the world. They live only in their own country , it looks like they don't belong to the planet earth , most of them knows nothing about other civilizations or countries , and they don't care"of course not all of them.
# 6Western Governments are Afraid of Iraqis with Large Brains and Big Ideas
"Westerners and specially their government is afraid of the Iraqi brains, it's their main concern , they are not afraid of the people with beards and guns , but of the people with large brains and big ideas , they are the real threat to them (we are talking about the governments) "
#7Western Civilians are Very Helpful
"They are very helpful , if someone in need and they are convinced that he really needs help , in any aspect , they try to help , they are very compassionate (of course not all of them)."
These are what the subjects said , I might agree with most of them and disagree with some , but that was what they have said , I collected it and rephrase into one article without changing the meaning , and I should mention again that this is the perception for the civilian westerners not for their armies or governments and this is not all Iraqis' perception of westerners , many Iraqis or Arabs might disagree with some of what is written in this post.

I'm glad the Iraqi impressions of people in the west (civilians) isn't all negative. Glad to see the people you know can remain objective.
Dr. M.
I'm surprised you haven't received a lot of comments about this dialog. It is quite interesting.
#1 - Agreed, some Americans, but not a lot, think most Arabs are terrorists. After all, there are probably several million Muslims and Arabs living in the US, and if most Americans felt that way, they would no longer be living here (think deportation). Also, 9/11 was a pretty trumatic experience, so some would be blinded. I think a second attack might change that from a few thinking that way, to a lot though.
#2 - I guess we pretty much have absolute freedom. A test to become a US citizen asked which freedom (in the Bill of Rights) is our most important? Freedom of speech? Freedom of the press? Freedom of assembly (protest)? Freedom to get a fair trial? etc.
The answer was the Right to vote, because it protects all the other Rights. Think about that for a moment. And by the way, did you vote?
#3 - Many people get their news only from TV and newspapers that are biased. But with talk radio and the internet, there is no longer a one-sided monopoly on the news.
#4 - I'm still looking for my brilliant idea and lots of dollars.
#5 - Some are, some aren't. Many Americans travel a lot.
#6 - This you need to explain, as I don't have a clue to what it means. Some examples?
#7 - I believe our government and
its citizens are compassionate and
helpful to survivers of natural diasters (earthquates, hurricanes, etc.). There are probably other examples as well.
Anyway, stay safe and keep your head down. Hopefully things are beginning to improve. The surge may get rid of the criminals and fanatics that you mentioned.

Hi, I'm a 26 year old computer programmer from the USA, of Euro decent. I thought I would respond to this list, to add another perspective to the discussion.
Note: I am just commenting on the views of some in my country. I do not share all of these opinions.
#1 - Close. The Americans who think like this do NOT think most Muslims and Arabs are terrorists. They realize that the violent ones are in the minority. Here is what they think about "most Muslims": They think they are complacent in their response to the violent extremists. They think that moderate Muslims are afraid of the extremists like us. Except they don't truly stand up to them, even though it is their countrymen and kin. We can't form your neutral government, you need to do that. We'll give that government the whole firepower of the USA, if it is truly neutral and not corrupt. We are just waiting for "most Muslims" to DO SOMETHING ABOUT THAT. Where is the 3rd militia, one that is made up of Sunni, Shiite and Arab and Kurd all together, mixed up - Iraqis? Where are the ones fighting for this freedom? We don't see them here. Maybe it's the media.
#2 This is mostly true. We can basically say what we want, when we want. We do misuse it sometimes. I basically agree with you here. Just one reminder, in any society there ARE limits and ours is no different. I just ask you understand there are some limits to what can be said here.
#3 This is true for the older generation. The internet is quickly changing things, and news no longer comes from the big TV networks for younger people. The media is free in theory, but the big media companies do not want to lose money, so they do not anger those who could make them lose money. Small newspapers and the internet are slowly getting more popular. Few people under 30years watch TV news or read big newspapers. The young people in our country are trying to fix this "slave to the media" problem.
#4 A brilliant idea is not nothing. Also, most people in America will live their life without being a millionare. Their kids, and their grandkids, also will most likely never be millionaires. They all have the opportunity to be millionaires though. You just have to be smart enough, and work really really hard at it. Working hard is more important than being smart. Nowhere on this earth can you make big money from nothing.
#5 This is sadly true, across all age groups. This goes back through our history as a large country, and it's a hard thing to fix. I read that China has a similar issue - Sinocentrism it's called. I think this is a (bad) side effect of being so large. Those that are not ignorant are trying to educate others. We hope through new communication like the internet maybe we will understand the bigger world better.
#6 I, sadly, cannot speak for my government. I do not like most of it, and can only vote. Our system is not perfect, but it's the best we could come up with at the time. Could you explain a little more about what you mean with this? I do not understand - which Iraqis with large brains and big ideas are we scared of? Examples please
#7 Thank you. Helping those in need is something taught in schools and churches across our country. I fear our endless quest of profit does not destroy this true American spirit.
Thanks for reading. I would love to hear back from you.
